ABOUT THE COURSE
In this 4-week class, we’ll focus on creating character behavior and expressing emotional points of view on stage.
Students should have the basics under their belt (Improv Fundamentals or equivalent).
We often see the same three or four emotions played on stage. It can get old and leave us feeling like we’re doing the same scene over and over -- like there’s a behavioral/emotional script our characters have to follow. Or worse, we just kinda stand there with no clear point of view, and end up just tackling the logistics of a scene.
This class will give you the chance to shake it up and try out some fresh places your characters can go. We’ll also examine how this applies to scene work and what it's like to be in a scene where emotion is the driving force. My style of instruction centers on making students feel supported while remaining open and happy to receive whatever you bring to the creative process. Let's get into it!
INSTRUCTOR
Kate Teichman
Kate has spent the last 20 or so years performing, teaching, and directing theater, sketch, and improv comedy. A midwesterner transplant, she has her B.F.A. in theater performance from Ohio University. Later, in Chicago, she trained and completed I.O.’s (formerly Improv Olympic) curriculum and worked as an actor for 8 years as an ensemble member with the Curious Theater Branch. After moving to the northeast in 2011, Kate has consistently taught improv at multiple levels, and she opened an improv comedy theater called Wage House, which she co-owned and operated. She also works as a teaching artist in hospitals, organizations, and schools. You can usually find Kate working on weird theater projects, on stage at Kismet with Improv Jones, or walking her dog.
